A Sculpture's Sad Legacy

Amongst the alcoholics, prostitutes, illegal street vendors and alcoholic prognosticating taitas stands La Mariposa, by famed Colombian sculptor Edgar Negret, shamefully abandoned. The abstract sculpture, whose name means 'Butterfly', presumably represents hope. Instead, it's a public urinal, a sleeping place for drunks, a refuge for pigeons.

  1. I was walking around with a friend when we both mentioned the samething. How beautiful works of art are just littered with graffiti and have just been destroyed. Funny how Bogota is a huge city of art and artists and yet the sculptures cant be respected (or taken care of).

This sculpture is in the heart of downtown, not quite the best place to put something in public and hope it get’s respected.

  2. Yes, but if they placed the sculpture somewhere else, fewer people would see it. Still, there are few places it'd be more vulnerable than on Plaza San Victorino.

Not long ago, I did an entry about the graffiti-covered Botero sculpture on Calle 26, near Parque el Renacimiento. Mike
